Why 90% of option buyers lose money
SEBI published a study in 2023: 9 out of 10 individual equity option buyers in India lost money. The total net loss by retail option buyers over FY2022–23 was approximately ₹51,000 crore. Here's why.
Reason 1: Time decay works against you relentlessly
Option buyers fight theta every day. If the underlying doesn't move quickly and significantly in your direction, the option loses value. Most traders buy options and then wait, the worst strategy.
Reason 2: Buying OTM because it's 'cheap'
₹5 Nifty options look cheap. For a 5× return you need only ₹25. But OTM options require a large move in a short time. Most expire worthless. The expected value of buying far OTM options repeatedly is negative.
Reason 3: IV crush at events
Buying options before major events (elections, RBI, earnings) when IV is elevated. Even a correct directional call loses money if IV falls faster than delta works in your favour.
> You can be right about direction and still lose money on options. This is uniquely dangerous for beginners who think options are directional bets.
Reason 4: No exit discipline
Holding losing options until they expire worthless instead of cutting losses early. A 50% loss on an option is recoverable; a 100% loss (expiry worthless) requires a 100% gain to recover.
Reason 5: Overtrading
Each trade has transaction costs, bid-ask spread, and starts with negative expected value (market maker's edge). Frequency of losing trades compounds against the buyer.

The solution: sell options instead of buying, or be highly selective about when and what to buy, only with strong conviction, limited to events, with defined stop-losses.
Takeaway. 90% of retail option buyers lose money. Key reasons: theta decay, buying far OTM, IV crush at events, no exit discipline, overtrading. Be selective, define maximum loss, and respect IV levels before buying.
