Volume-price analysis (VPA)
What is VPA?
Volume-Price Analysis (VPA) is the study of how price and volume interact together, period by period. It was developed from Richard Wyckoff's work in the early 1900s. Traders have used it for over a century.
The core idea: if you understand what volume tells you about the intentions of large players (institutions, smart money), you can follow them into trades.
The four key VPA scenarios
1. Rising price + rising volume = healthy uptrend. Buyers are eager and increasing in number.
2. Rising price + falling volume = uptrend weakening. Fewer buyers are driving the move, unsustainable.
3. Falling price + rising volume = strong downtrend. Sellers are enthusiastic and increasing.
4. Falling price + falling volume = downtrend weakening. Sellers losing conviction, potential base forming.
> Scenario 2 and 4 are the most tradeable. They signal trend exhaustion before price confirms it.
Buying and selling climaxes
Buying climax: Price makes a new high on massive volume, then reverses. The huge volume means institutions were distributing (selling to retail buyers who chased the high). Bearish reversal sign.
Selling climax: Price makes a new low on massive volume, then reverses upward. Institutions were accumulating (buying from retail sellers who panicked). Bullish reversal sign.

Wyckoff's accumulation and distribution
Richard Wyckoff noticed that before big uptrends, institutions quietly accumulate stocks in a sideways range. Before big downtrends, they distribute (sell). Identifying these phases via VPA gives you an edge on large moves.
Practical takeaway
Never look at price without checking volume. If price does something interesting, volume tells you whether to believe it.
Takeaway. Price + volume together > price alone. Rising price on falling volume = warning. High-volume reversals near extremes = powerful signals.
