Sweep-in deposits
A sweep-in FD is a linked deposit that gives you FD-level interest rates while keeping your money as accessible as a savings account. Most people don't know it exists.
How it works
You set a threshold, say ₹25,000, in your savings account. Any balance above that threshold automatically sweeps into a fixed deposit. The FD earns FD interest (6–7%) instead of savings interest (2.5–3%).
When you need money, an ATM withdrawal, a UPI payment, an EMI debit, the required amount sweeps BACK from the FD to your savings account automatically. No manual action needed. No premature withdrawal penalty (or minimal penalty depending on the bank).
> It's the best of both worlds: FD returns + savings account liquidity.
Example
Balance: ₹1,00,000. Threshold: ₹25,000.
₹75,000 sweeps into FD at 7%. Your savings account shows ₹25,000.
You transfer ₹30,000 to a friend. Your ₹25,000 of savings covers most of it, and the system breaks exactly ₹5,000 out of the FD for the rest. Savings goes to ₹0, the FD sits at ₹70,000, and the transfer clears like nothing happened.
No failed payment. No penalty. No phone call to the bank. And that ₹70,000 keeps earning 7%.
7%FD interest vs 3% savings interest on same idle money
Which banks offer this?
Most major Indian banks, SBI (Multi Option Deposit), HDFC (Super Saver), ICICI (Money Multiplier), Kotak (811 with sweep), Axis. Check your bank's name for the product, they all call it something different.
When to use it
If you consistently maintain ₹25,000+ in your savings account, sweep-in gives you FD returns on that idle money automatically. Set it up once and forget it.
It will not replace a proper emergency fund strategy, but it makes your emergency fund work harder.
Sweep-ins only work on money you already have sitting there. So what do you do while you're still building the pile, ₹5,000 at a time?
Takeaway. A sweep-in FD earns FD interest on idle savings while keeping your money fully accessible. Set it up once, it runs automatically.
