Multiple timeframe analysis
Why one timeframe isn't enough
Every chart tells a different story depending on the timeframe you use. A stock might look bearish on a daily chart but bullish on a weekly chart. Multiple timeframe analysis (MTFA) reconciles these views.
The top-down approach
Start with the bigger picture and work down to the entry timeframe:
1. Weekly chart: establish the primary trend direction. Is the big picture up or down?
2. Daily chart: identify the medium-term trend, key support/resistance, and patterns
3. Hourly/15-minute chart: time your precise entry and set stop-losses
> Trade in the direction of the higher timeframe trend, enter on the lower timeframe signal.
The timeframe hierarchy
- Position traders (hold weeks-months): monthly → weekly → daily
- Swing traders (hold days-weeks): weekly → daily → 4-hour
- Day traders (hold hours): daily → 1-hour → 15-minute
- Scalpers (hold minutes): 15-minute → 5-minute → 1-minute
The higher the timeframe, the more significant the signal. A daily support level > an hourly support level.
Higher timeframe winsa weekly trend outranks a daily signal. Always.
Confluence
When signals align across multiple timeframes, it's called confluence, and it dramatically increases the probability of the trade working. A daily support level that is ALSO a Fibonacci 61.8% retracement AND the 200 SMA? Very high conviction entry.
The conflict resolution rule
When the daily and weekly disagree, the weekly wins. Only trade against the higher-timeframe trend when you have overwhelming confluence of signals, and even then, keep it small.
MTFA in practice
Before any trade, ask: what is the weekly trend? Does this daily signal align? Is my entry on the lower timeframe confirming? If the answer is yes across all three, higher confidence trade.
Takeaway. Start with weekly for direction, use daily for setup, use intraday for entry. Trade WITH the higher timeframe trend.
